Are Pay Rises the Answer to The Cost of Living and Mental Health Crisis

Apr 27, 2023

The buzz words at the moment in all industries is ‘pay rises’ and ‘strikes.’ Never have we experienced so many industries striking in the public sector. What are your views on this and how has it effected you?

All workers are becoming anxious with the cost of living and the media especially drives people’s anxiety to the extreme. Sometimes, the media doesn’t help by always reporting the negative news and very often the situation can be ‘hyped up’ which makes us all panic more.

This year, people are definitely more aware of their spending habits due to the cost of living.

Clever purchasing can save money on everything we spend such as making lists before we go out shopping to the supermarket, not throwing away food but freezing it, batch cooking are just a few things we can all do to not only save money but also reduce waste.

If we apply ideas like this into our lifestyle and the media focus on the positives, then could it be that people wouldn’t get as anxious?

Instead if they promoted exercise, or about spending more time outside such as walking by water or sitting and being quiet these are all things that would help our mental health and help reduce these anxieties rather than make them worse!

To promote our mental health and the issue of companies not being able to afford high pay rises, some companies have offered flexible working hours and reward schemes to create a healthier working atmosphere, which has been met favourably by workers across all industries.

At Full Circle we have given all our relief staff a pay rise and introduced a reward scheme as an appreciation to their loyalty.

Although we have had to squeeze margins more so than ever, retaining our staff and clients are our priority.

Could the public sector also adapt other incentives alongside the pay rise so that it doesn’t have a detrimental effect on inflation.

We are living in a different working world now , after covid people appreciate home time more and don’t want to work 80 hours a week. By offering more holiday days and better working hours could this be a step forward.
